Celebrating the First Day of Summer with Flower Photography

Yes, I'm at it again with my flower photography! I can't believe half the year has already flown by. Spring tulips and daffodils have come and gone and now we're into summer. My last post with tips on taking flower photos featured the more exotic orchid blooms. On this last outing however, I didn't plan on taking any pictures. I was just stopping by a local garden center to take a peek. Actually I was trying to go to grocery shopping but the store wasn't open yet, so why not kill some time at my local big box garden center? Of course I had my trusty camera phone (iPhone 6s Plus) with me so I didn't miss out on capturing some lovely flowers. After taking a few shots, I decided to shoot the rest in square format. I felt it provided better framing for some individual flowers I was trying to capture and helped keep out the more distracting elements such as plant labels and price tags. Of course you can always crop in post-processing, but it can change the way you compose your shot, so if you know you are going to want square photos, then it's best to do that from the get-go. I had some great filtered light - so these shots didn't require much by way of editing, just some white level adjustments and some sharpening but that's about it! Hope you're enjoying your summer so far!
